Café holds photo exhibit

Island Java Co. Cafe near downtown San Mateo is offering more than white choco mocha and empanadas to its customers these days. Cafe owner DJ Smith has made wall space available for an art show by the Skyline College Photography Club. The current group of student work presents striking images of Mission Dolores, barns and lighthouses, done in various media including silver gelatin and sepia digital.

The Skyline College Photography Club is committed to the understanding and practice of photography as a significant visual art. The club strives to play a creative role in the Skyline College community through skill sharing workshops and a weekly membership lab. SCPC is in the process of creating a scholarship award for deserving photography students. The club can be reached at skylinephotoclub@yahoo.com.

“We are not just a social club. The Skyline College Photography Club is very dedicated to enhancing the artistic efforts of its members through education, exhibits and other supportive experiences,” Club President Virginia Rosales said.

Skyline College Photography Club works will be on display at Island Java Co. Café through at least the middle of summer. Island Java Co Café is located at 800 S. B St., Suite 500, San Mateo.

Mayors help out with meals

Peninsula mayors joined their counterparts across the country March 19 for National “Mayors For Meals” Day, making food deliveries to homebound seniors.

Peninsula Volunteers, Inc. hosted San Mateo County activities as part of PV’s “March for Meals” campaign, aimed at raising awareness of senior hunger and encouraging action on the part of local communities.

“We are excited about having all the Mayors whose cities we serve participate in our event. It is an excellent way to continue our relationship and support our homebound population,” Peninsula Volunteers Executive Director Michelle Knapik said.

Peninsula Volunteers provides seniors with programs and guidance that help them pursue long and useful lives. Each year, Peninsula Volunteers provides over $4.2 million in services, including over 145,000 hot meals to seniors and the homebound, in large part through “Meals on Wheels.” PV clients receive both a hot, nutritious meal, and a positive source of support when the meals are delivered by a friendly volunteer or PV driver.
