DUI may be to blame in fatal crash
October 04, 2007, 12:00 AM Bay City News Service

A four-car crash on Highway 101 in Menlo Park early yesterday morning claimed the life of a South San Francisco woman, and injured three others, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported just after 2 a.m. south of Willow Road, when a silver 2001 Ford Mustang collided with a blue 2000 Toyota Celica, the CHP reported. Immediately after, a yellow 1991 Acura Integra collided with the Mustang, and a red 1999 Toyota Camry struck the Celica.

A CHP dispatcher said at the time that one of the vehicles had reportedly spun out and collided into the highway’s center divide, and was then struck head-on by another vehicle.

A passenger in the Celica, 43-year-old Lily Zeledon, of South San Francisco, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office. The male driver of the Celica sustained major injuries and was taken to Stanford Medical Center, the CHP reported.

The driver of the Mustang, a 25-year-old Palo Alto man whose name has not been released, was arrested after the crash on suspicion of driving under the influence. He was uninjured, the CHP reported.

Two others, a 26-year-old San Jose man driving the Integra, and a 44-year-old East Palo Alto man driving the Camry, suffered moderate injuries and were also taken to the Stanford Medical Center, according to the CHP.

The crash, which closed the highway for more than three hours, remains under investigation. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact CHP Officer Dan Clapp at (650) 369-6261.
