Teacher admits to affair
July 13, 2007, 12:00 AM By Michelle Durand
The Capuchino High School music director who carried on a months-long affair with a 17-year-old student pleaded no contest to felony statutory rape and oral copulation with a minor in return for no more than 16 months in prison.

Adam Glen Albrecht, 28, changed his plea at a Superior Court review hearing Thursday, two weeks after he resigned his job and was arrested by Broadmoor police.

Albrecht also pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Although he could receive much less than the 16-month maximum at his Aug. 2 sentencing, Albrecht will be required to register as a sex offender for life, said Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.

The plea deal is “a very good settlement,” Wagstaffe said, adding that the teacher component made the case more serious than if it were different circumstances.

Albrecht and a 17-year-old female student allegedly began a six-month sexual relationship which carried on until June when her mother discovered the incidents through cellular phone bills.

The encounters reportedly happened primarily at Albrecht’s Broadmoor home and there are no allegations involving other students. Although the relationship allegedly lasted until last month, prosecutors couldn’t charge any acts past May when the girl turned 18.

Albrecht was charged with 16 counts of felony oral copulation with a minor, 16 counts of felony unlawful sexual intercourse, one count of witness dissuasion, one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and one count of possessing less than an ounce of marijuana.

Albrecht taught at Capuchino High School for about three years and achieved permanent status this year. His classes included advanced band, string orchestra, mixed choir and jazz band.

Prior to his arrest, Albrecht resigned his position, said San Mateo Union High School District Interim Superintendent David Miller.

At Albrecht’s last court appearance, Judge Carl Holm slashed his bail from $500,00 to $100,000 which he posted in cash.
