Mattress fire burns RWC hotel
May 09, 2006, 12:00 AM Daily Journal staff report
A mattress fire at the Pacific Euro Hotel triggered an alarm and water sprinkler system, leaving the hotel with minimal damage.

The guests staying in the 53-room Redwood City hotel began evacuating before the fire department arrived. Upon their arrival at 868 Main St., firefighters entered the building looking for the cause of the fire and found one room with smoke and an active sprinkler head.

The fire, which was burning in the mattress, began at 4:57 p.m. and was controlled by the sprinkler system. It was under control by 5:06 p.m. The cause was determined to be smoking materials that were not properly discarded, according to a press release.

There was a total of $3,500 in damages to the structure and the contents of the room. All guests were able to return to their rooms within an hour of the alarm.
