The new Peninsula Coalition gathered Tuesday night in the marble lobby of Borel Bank in San Mateo to woo new members and discuss issues facing regional businesses and communities.
The coalition, formed six months ago to link business, labor and community leaders, also showed off its Political Action Committee’s $100,000 effort to distribute a new flier supporting Measure A’s transportation projects. If passed Nov. 2, Measure A would continue a half cent sales tax for transportation in San Mateo County.
Jon Rubin, president and CEO of the coalition, said he helped form the group to harmonize community planning of education, mass transportation and business, and to rally around the common goal of a “sustainable future.”
Rubin said his work as chief of staff for state Sen. Quentin Kopp in the late 1980s showed him too many public policies driven by anger and frustration. He said he hoped the Peninsula Coalition gives city councils facts on proposed projects so the views of the loudest and angriest community members do not weigh too heavily.
“We have to consider the ramifications of every issue,” Rubin said.
Peninsula Coalition Boardmember Stacey Wagner said the new group will tackle controversial issues and support candidates in local council races, and that the group is already linking influential Peninsula people.
Rubin said the group’s next project will be an education summit next year, and that he was content with Tuesday night’s turnout of about 100. |
