Man to trial for stabbing at baptism party
January 26, 2013, 05:00 AM Daily Journal Staff Report

A 28-year-old Redwood City man accused of stabbing another at a baptismal party because he felt his wife had been disrespected will be tried on assault and battery charges, a judge ruled after a preliminary hearing on the evidence.

Yasmani Moreno Ramirez has pleaded not guilty to the charges but was held to answer after the hearing in which three prosecution witnesses testified but none for the defense. He returns to court Feb. 8 to enter a Superior Court plea and possibly set a trial date.

Ramirez was arrested Nov. 17 after Redwood City police responded to the gathering at the Highland Community Club on Fernside Street.

According to police, a fight broke out between several people, including Ramirez, in part because the 24-year-old stabbing victim allegedly placed his hand on the back of Ramirez's wife and asked her to dance.

Ramirez allegedly stabbed the man once in the abdomen and slashed his arms four times.

Ramirez remains in custody on $25,000 bail.
