A 6-year-old girl died Friday afternoon from injuries she sustained in a hit-and-run crash that seriously injured her mother Thursday afternoon in Menlo Park, a police sergeant said.
The crash happened at the intersection of Willow Road and Bayfront Expressway just before 2 p.m.
A preliminary investigation indicates two cars were street racing when one of them crashed into a third vehicle carrying the girl and her mother, police said.
Surveillance footage from a nearby business revealed that the suspect vehicle involved in the crash ran a red light before colliding with the victims’ vehicle, Menlo Park police Sgt. Matthew Ortega said.
The driver who allegedly caused the crash then got out and climbed into the other vehicle involved in the street race, according to police. The drivers fled the scene but left the wrecked car.
Ortega said the registered owner of the wrecked car does not appear to have been involved in the crash.
Following the collision, the girl and her mother were hospitalized with serious injuries. Ortega said the girl died at Stanford Medical Center Friday afternoon. Her mother is in stable condition.
Police have identified Shannon Fox, 24, of East Palo Alto, as a person of interest in the case. Anyone who might have witnessed the collision or who has information regarding Fox's whereabouts is encouraged to contact the Menlo Park Police Department at 330-6300. |
