Monetary support for candidates hoping to lead local school districts is starting to pile up with campaign financial forms for those running for office due Thursday.
Forms simply need to be postmarked by the due date, resulting in the omission of financial information for some candidates. Below are the contributions reported thus far in the Sequoia Union, San Mateo Union, San Mateo-Foster City Elementary, Hillsborough City, Redwood City Elementary and San Bruno Park Elementary school districts. Omitted information will be reported as it is received in the Daily Journal’s Election Journal.
Sequoia Union
Eight candidates are in the county’s most contested school board race for two seats on the Sequoia Union High School District Board of Trustees. Candidates include: Nohema Fernandez, Bob Ferrando, Jacqueline Wallace Greene, Beth Injasoulian, Virginia Chang Kiraly, Alan Sarver, Chris Thomsen and Noria Zasslow.
Chang Kiraly raised $7,109 — consisting of $2,630 in donations, $1,479 in self loans and $3,000 in nonmonetary donations. She was given $100 from retired sheriff Don Horsley; $100 from Dennis McBride, Redwood City Elementary School District trustee; and $480 from herself. Daniel Trimble gave $3,000 worth of political campaign, treasury and financial consulting. She spent $2,068.34 on envelopes, printing and filing fees.
Sarver raised $5,041.25 so far including $1,000 from himself; $100 from McBride and $100 from Eric Shrader, former Belmont-Redwood Shores Elementary School District trustee. Sarver has spent $285.95 on campaign literature.
Thomsen raised $4,139 in donations and spent $125 on campaign literature.
Ferrando was given $399 in donations and spent $127 on envelopes. He has a $333 unpaid bill for campaign literature.
Information for Fernandez, Wallace Greene, Beth Injasoulian and Noria Zasslow was not yet available.
San Mateo Union
San Mateo Union High School Board President Peter Hanley, Vice President Linda Lees Dwyer and Trustee Robert Griffin will be running against challengers Mike Loy and Guadalupe Ortiz.
Loy raised $15,144 including $10,000 from a self loan and $5,144 in donations. Loy has spent $8,845 on campaign consultants and filing fees.
Hanley raised $11,574 in donations including $500 from the Sprinkler Fitters and Apprentices Local 483 Local Political Action Committee; $2,500 from the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 467 Political Action Committee; $1,000 from the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 447 Political Action Committee; $1,000 from the U.A. Local Union No. 342 Political Action Committee; $1,500 from the Sheet Metal International Association Local 104; $500 from the Sheet Metal Workers International Association Local 162; $500 from the San Mateo County Building and Construction Trade Council; $125 from San Mateo Mayor Brandt Grotte; $250 from the Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 3 Political Action Committee; $200 from fellow Trustee Stephen Rogers; $300 from Beth Hunkapiller, San Carlos Elementary School District trustee; $1,000 from the United Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and Asbestos Workers Local 16; $200 from Jed Wallace, California Charter Schools Association CEO; $500 from the IBEW Local 332 Education Fund; $100 from the Cement Masons Local 400 Political Action Committee; and $1,000 from the Northern California Carpenters Regional Council. He loaned himself $100.
Thus far, Hanley spent $1,826.68 on filing fees and campaign literature.
Ortiz raised $655 including $250 from state Assemblyman Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo. She spent $242 thus far.
Information for Lees Dwyer and Griffin was not yet available.
San Mateo-Foster City
Four are competing for two spots on the San Mateo-Foster City Elementary School District Board of Trustees. Trustee Lory Lorimer Lawson, parents Ellen Mallory Ulrich and Julie Chan and software developer John Miller are running.
Ulrich raised $6,975 in donations including: $100 from San Mateo Councilwoman Jan Epstein; $100 from Baywood Elementary School Principal Joanne Day; $100 from Polyscapes; and $125 from Kenna Enterprises. She spent $532.23 on campaign literature, postage and fundraising.
Miller raised $1,674.97, including $1,078.97 in self loans, and has yet to spend any funds. He received $100 from Phyllis Moore, former San Mateo-Foster City Elementary School District trustee.
Lawson raised $1,250, including a $1,000 in self loans and has yet to spend any funds.
Information for Chan was not yet available.
Hillsborough
Trustee Mary Ellen Benninger is facing off against parents Steven Gans, Lynne Esselstein and Steven Koury all hoping for one of three seats on the Hillsborough City School District Board of Trustees.
Esselstein raised $2,023.69, which includes $1,250 in self donations. She also received $250 from Barby Regan, pastoral minister of faith for St. Bartholomew Church and $156.89 from attorney Chris Redfield. Thus far, she spent $1,394.50 on voter information and campaign literature.
Koury loaned himself $1,000 for the campaign and spent $244.72 on campaign buttons, voter information, lawn signs, hats and labels.
Information was not yet available for Benninger and Gans.
Redwood City, San Bruno Park
Redwood City Elementary Board President Maria Diaz-Slocum and Trustee Hilary Paulson are facing challengers Jack Hickey and Lea Cuniberti-Duran for two seats.
Paulson raised $2,467 in donations. She received $100 from fellow Trustee Dennis McBride; $200 from fellow Trustee Alicia MacAvoy; $100 from Diaz-Slocum; and $100 from former sheriff Don Horsley. Thus far, Paulson spent $148 on voter information and campaign literature.
Diaz-Slocum raised $648, of which $200 is a self loan. She received $100 from McBride and $100 from Horsley. Thus far, Diaz-Slocum spent $572 on filing fees.
Information was not yet available for Hickey or Cuniberti-Duran.
The race for three seats on the San Bruno Park Elementary School District is contested with incumbents Skip Henderson and Jim Prescott challenged by former trustee Chuck Zelnik, physician and professor Henry Sanchez and food server Maria Araujo.
