Local briefs: Parent association head takes embezzlement plea
July 30, 2009, 12:00 AM
The former president of the Fair Oaks Elementary School Parents Association pleaded no contest to felony embezzlement for allegedly pilfering money from school fundraisers, including a picture day with Santa Claus.

The details of Rosendo Cazares Abarca’s negotiated settlement were not immediately available. Abarca, 39, returns to court Sept. 1 for sentencing. According to the District Attorney’s Office, Abarca had access to the association’s bank accounts and wrote checks to himself and family members at least 10 times between 2006 and 2008. The amount taken is estimated at more than $3,500 from the checks and another $1,500 from two separate school fundraisers, a garage sale and picture day with Santa Claus, for which he failed to deposit the funds, according to the prosecution.

Prosecutors say Abarca was motivated by unemployment and drug addiction. He remains in custody in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Teen gets fall attempted murder hearing

A teenager accused of stabbing a San Mateo man repeatedly in the head and chest while he slept at his home computer will learn in October if he’ll stand trial on multiple felonies including attempted murder.

Donald Peau Fukofuka, 19, of San Mateo, has pleaded not guilty to all charges, including attempted murder, first-degree burglary, second-degree robbery and an allegation of causing great bodily injury. He returns to court Oct. 5 for a preliminary hearing.

On May 31, Fukofuka, according to the prosecution, entered a home on the 600 block of Birch Avenue near South Grant Street at approximately 4:30 a.m. The 29-year-old victim reported having fallen asleep at his computer and waking up to an intruder stabbing him in the head, neck and chest.

The intruder allegedly took an iPhone belonging to the victim’s girlfriend who was sleeping in another room and fled. The woman woke to her boyfriend’s screams and called for help. The victim sustained a collapsed lung and required extensive stitches to his head.

San Mateo police arrested Fukofuka days later in the 1700 block of South Amphlett Boulevard.

He remains in custody in lieu of $500,000 bail.

Millbrae boy, 16,

killed in crash

A 16-year-old Millbrae boy was killed in a crash on state Highway 84 in unincorporated San Mateo County late Sunday night, San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault said Tuesday.

Kyle Tseng was killed in the crash at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday between two vehicles on Highway 84 near Madera Lane east of San Gregorio, CHP Officer Ralph Caggiano said.

Emergency personnel responded and pronounced Tseng dead at the scene, according to Foucrault.

Two other people were transported to area hospitals, one with moderate injuries.

Masseur pleads not guilty to porn, sexual acts with child

An unlicensed San Mateo masseur charged with performing a sexual act with 2-year-old child and groping an undercover police officer investigating his business pleaded not guilty to charges in both cases and will stand trial in November.

Steven Morris Hurd, 57, faces life in prison if convicted of some of the charges, including three counts of performing a sexual act with a child 10 years or younger — each a potential life sentence — one count of felony possession of child pornography, one count of possessing matter depicting a child under 18, one count of possessing Vicodin without a prescription and five counts of misdemeanor sexual battery. He is in custody on no-bail status and returns to court Nov. 30 for trial.

Police arrested Hurd Jan. 2 after a female officer posing as a client at his Edison Street home reported that during the course of treatment he made multiple sexual comments, groped her and forced her to grope him.

String of burglaries

hits South City

A string of armed robberies have occurred in the Westborough neighborhood and around Callan Boulevard this month prompting police to seek the public’s help finding the suspect.

A similar suspect description was given in at least five of the armed robberies. The suspect is described as a black male in his 20s to 30s, 5 feet 7 inches to 5 feet 10 inches and 160 to 190 pounds wearing dark clothing. He was reported to be wearing a jacket or hoodie sweatshirt, according to a press release written by police Sgt. Joni Lee.

The robberies occurred between 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. Victims were approached by the man on foot just after parking and exiting their cars. The suspect pointed a gun at the victims and has taken items ranging from wallets, purses, cell phones and iPods. Anyone with information about the suspect should call Detective Doug Smith at (650) 877-8910.

The South San Francisco Police Department is encouraging residents to be particularly observant of surroundings when returning home at night and to report a complete description of any suspicious people to the police immediately at 877-8900.
